PM son's TÜRGEV is where bribes go, CHP leader maintains

Leader of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has maintained that the Foundation of Youth and Education in Turkey (TÜRGEV), of which Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s son Bilal Erdoğan is an executive board member, serves as a center where bribes are transferred by businessmen whose companies are granted public tenders, the Sözcü daily said on Friday.

“[TÜRGEV] is a center where bribes are collected against public tenders,” CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu told the daily, maintaining that money acquired would be used to set up a parallel, alternative structure in the education system.

According to Kılıçdaroğlu, who says that Erdoğan has tampered with every state institution to cover up possible leaks about new corruption cases, the amount of corruption in the government is so big that it would not be possible to cover it up. “Soon we will make new announcements [about the corruption]. The prime minister should continue watching us,” the CHP leader said.

As part of a far-reaching graft probe that became public in December involving four former cabinet ministers and others, Bilal Erdoğan was sent a summons by one of the prosecutors leading the graft probe to give a statement regarding corruption allegations in which he is allegedly involved. But the prime minister’s son is under the protection of his father and did not respect the prosecutor’s call.

In the party’s group parliamentary meeting in the past week, Kılıçdaroğlu demanded to know if $99,999,990 was deposited into an account that TÜRGEV had at a public bank on April 26, 2013.

Noting that he has not yet received a response from Erdoğan regarding his claim about TÜRGEV, Kılıçdaroğlu said: “Prime Minister Erdoğan closely follows the money being transferred to the foundation; he personally provides financing [for the foundation]. He is presenting this [transfer of money to the foundation] as charity. No charity is conducted with ill-gotten money. We know very well why this money is being collected. They want to establish a new structure [in education]. Bilal Erdoğan meets with officials from the Ministry of Education from time to time. One feels the need to ask: ‘What does Bilal Erdoğan have to do with civil servants? Why do they come together? They want to set up a parallel structure in the area of education.”

In a previous news report that appeared in the Cumhuriyet daily on Wednesday, the bank account number Kılıçdaroğlu made reference to in his speech in the CHP group meeting was the first account TÜRGEV had in Vakıfbank, a public bank. The $99,999,990 deposited in this account was later transferred to another account in the same bank, the daily noted.

Nearly a month later, $50 million of the money was transferred back to the original account and four months later, $28 million more, according to Cumhuriyet. The report in Cumhuriyet provided no answers about to whom, from which account number and for what in return the wire transfers were made. But a large sum of money was withdrawn on Sept. 26, 2012, from the money deposited in the original account and TL 50 million ($21,800,000) was paid from this account to purchase the Fatih Cultural Center in a joint venture between the Ensar Foundation and TÜRGEV. Nearly TL 50 million of the money was, after being deposited in various accounts, deposited on July 2, 2012, into an account in Albaraka Türk.

30 January 2014 /TODAY’S ZAMAN, ANKARA
A deputy from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) raised a parliamentary question on Thursday about claims that 57,000 square meters of public land had been allocated to the Foundation of Youth and Education in Turkey (TÜRGEV).

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s son, Bilal Erdoğan, is a member of TÜRGEV’s executive board. According to CHP İstanbul deputy Kadir Gökmen Öğüt, the Ministry of Finance owns a plot of 120,000 square meters in the Tuzla district of İstanbul, and there are rumors that some 57,000 square meters of that land was recently allocated to TÜRGEV. In his question to Parliament, Öğüt asked about the veracity of the rumors; if they were true, the deputy asked the prime minister to explain under what conditions the land was allocated to the foundation.

The rumors follow earlier claims raised by a Turkish media outlet that the Ümraniye Municipality in İstanbul illegally donated public recreational facilities to TÜRGEV. The Taraf daily reported on Tuesday that the Ümraniye Municipality donated several public buildings to TÜRGEV in 2013. The facilities had been opened by the municipality for the benefit of Ümraniye residents. However, the municipality donated the buildings to the foundation without notifying the proper authorities, according to the report. The report said the foundation then converted the buildings into a private kindergarten.

In addition, earlier this month, rumors surfaced in the Turkish media that Erdoğan had asked Ali Ağaoğlu, the chairman of a leading Turkish construction company, to donate 20 acres of land to the foundation in return for helping to resolve a legal dispute over public land that Ağaoğlu’s company wanted.

Claim: Hospitals to be allocated to TÜRGEV

Also on Thursday, claims emerged that a government plan to transfer two private hospitals in İstanbul and Ankara to the Health Ministry is actually aimed to allocate those hospitals to TÜRGEV, which then plans to turn them into private universities.

A sack law that includes an article for the transfer of the two hospitals established by Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate Foundation (Türk Diyanet Vakfı) was recently adopted in Parliament. Sack law is a term commonly used in Parliament to describe a package of unrelated revisions to laws that are lumped together for the purpose of fast-tracking legislative changes.

According to a related article in the law, the Health Ministry will pay the cost of the two hospitals to the foundation. Sources say the two hospitals will cost some TL 100 million.

According to claims, the Health Ministry is planning to allocate the two hospitals to TÜRGEV after they are transferred to the ministry. The hospitals will allegedly be used as the Faculty of Medicine at İbni Haldun University, a private university that TÜRGEV is planning to open soon.

In the meantime, the Religious Affairs Directorate staff is unhappy with the planned transfer of their hospitals to the Health Ministry. The hospitals offer low-cost health services to the staff. The Turkish Religious Affairs and Foundations Employees Union (Diyanet-Sen) Chairman Nuri Ünal said they are opposed to plans for the transfer of the hospitals. “I was previously informed that the hospitals would not be transferred and they would continue to provide health services in 2014. But Parliament has now passed this law,” he complained.

Turkey, Iran to establish high level cooperation council during Erdoğan’s Tehran visit

A visit by President Rouhani to Turkey is also on the agenda, according to Iran’s Foreign Ministry. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Afkham described the visit as ‘very important,' adding that Erdoğan will meet Khamenei, Rouhani and Zarif.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan departed for Tehran Jan. 28 for his first meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Turkey and Iran will sign an agreement to establish a high-level cooperation council during the visit, after Western countries eased sanctions on Tehran over an interim nuclear deal.

Paying a two day visit to Tehran, Erdoğan will hold talks with Rouhani, First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri, and the religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamanei. He will also deliver a speech at the international institute of the Iranian Foreign Ministry. According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, a visit to Turkey by President Hassan Rouhani will also be on the agenda. Spokeswoman Marzihe Afkham described the visit as “very important.”

“Dialogue and contacts have entered a new phase, and we hope this trend continues. Besides serving the interests of the two countries, we hope [our dialogue] will serve the interests of the region as well,” Afkham said. Energy-hungry Turkey is planning to increase oil and gas imports from Tehran after the gradual lifting of sanctions on the Islamic republic’s energy sector after an interim nuke deal with the West.

However, a visiting U.S. official warned Ankara that companies should hold off making new business with Iran.

“Iran is not open for business … Businesses interested in engaging in Iran really should hold off. The day may come when Iran is open for business, but the day is not today,” David Cohen, the U.S. secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, told reporters on Jan. 27. He was in Ankara for discussions at the Foreign Ministry on the implementation of the Joint Plan of Action (JPOA), which was agreed on by the P5+1, the European Union and Iran.

Syria messages

“What we are working toward is the possibility of a long-term, comprehensive resolution with the Iranians in which they demonstrate that their nuclear program is exclusively for peaceful purposes,” Cohen added.

Meanwhile, Erdoğan yesterday delivered messages on developments in Syria ahead of his trip, harshly criticizing the international community for its “inaction” on the regime’s “brutality against civilians.” Ankara will maintain its “humanitarian policies” on Syria, Erdoğan said, adding that Turkey’s attitude on Syria would “make history.”

“We’ll continue to defend the rights of the oppressed, despite all pressure and all sabotages,” he said, addressing his parliamentary group. “We’ll continue to carry aid to the oppressed [in Syria], as a responsibility of being a great state, despite some staging treacherous sabotages … Syria faces a heavy examination. As brothers of Syria, we will also put our stamp on history through our own examination,” Erdoğan added.

Turkish main opposition voices new

graft claims

The main opposition party has voiced new graft claims against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his family with a question on a nearly $100 million transaction to the bank account of a foundation which counts the premier’s son, Bilal

Erdoğan, as one of its board members.

“TÜRGEV [Service for Youth and Education Foundation of Turkey] has an account at Vakıfbank: TR 20020001500158048013239675. Now I got questions for the prime minister: First, does TÜRGEV have such an account? And secondly, were 99,999,990 dollars transferred into this account on April 26? Is this money graft? Let’s satisfy our curiosity if you make a statement on these,” Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), said at a parliamentary group meeting yesterday.

The CHP head said Erdoğan had converted the foundation into a “center of graft” and pulled his own son into the graft network via TÜRGEV.

“It’s being run by Bilal Erdoğan. We are not beating the air. You are giving your son an advantage by using your position. You are asking for bribes [from businessmen] in return for pledging tenders. In one of your statements, you said: ‘I have never seen a thief learning how to steal from his son. It descends from father to son,’” Kılıçdaroğlu said. “You have pulled your own son into corruption and graft. Aren’t you aware what kind of a sin you have committed?”

Showing a picture taken three weeks before the Dec. 17, 2013, operation that showed Erdoğan and the now-arrested Reza Sarrab, along with other allegedly corrupt former ministers, Kılıçdaroğlu called the prime minister to immediately submit a summary of proceedings about four of his ministers to Parliament.

“Mr. Recep, even if we bring all washing machines together, they won’t be enough to clear the dirt on you. You should immediately send these proceedings. Otherwise I will write the title of ‘chief thief’ on your forehead,” he said.

Claiming that Erdoğan accepted two villas from a businessman in return for easing zoning restrictions in Urla, near İzmir, just after sacking the former governor for refusing to do so, Kılıçdaroğlu said, “I cannot understand their interests in villas; especially villas with pools.”

He also read the transcript of an alleged voice recording between Erdoğan and a businessman on the Urla villas.

PM Erdoğan slams the local and international media, business groups, investors, opposition parties and the Gülen movement and calls them as ‘the losers’ lobby’ targetting his party

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has slammed what he called “the losers’ lobby” – local and international media, business groups, investors, opposition parties and the Fethullah Gülen movement – accusing them of targeting the Turkish economy and people in a bid to overthrow the government.

“Smear campaigns against Turkey have mostly been carried out by some circles inside Turkey. Certain media groups, some businessmen and business organizations, some civil society organizations and even the main opposition party and other political parties have unfortunately taken the task of smearing their own country and economy,” Erdoğan told lawmakers from his Justice and Development Party (AKP) at a parliamentary group meeting on Jan. 28.

The group is not just targeting the government and its policies but the entire Turkish economy, Erdoğan said, calling the move a “treasonous plan” aiming at tarnishing the credibility of the government.

He repeated his earlier accusations of treachery against the Turkish Industry and Business Association (TÜSİAD), saying conducting such a smear campaign against one’s own country would be regarded as an act of betrayal in every part of the world.

With the fight between Erdoğan and Gülen becoming bitterer, the statements coming from each side are also increasing in venom. Gülen recently gave two comprehensive interviews to leading international media, the BBC and the Wall Street Journal, amid the ongoing corruption and graft operation engulfing some of Erdoğan’s ministers and his close circles, including his own son.

The BBC and the Wall Street Journal have also borne the brunt of Erdoğan’s criticisms, with the Turkish leader turning the clock back to the 1930s to hint that they were part of Jewish capital.

“Who are the bosses of these newspapers? They recently did the same thing in England and [British Prime Minister David] Cameron immediately shut down newspapers. Then they have started to hit from America. The same mentality. We should know this mentality. With whom are they moving? Who are their partners?” asked Erdoğan.

Arguing that the country’s top business leaders had never been audited in the past and that they started to voice their unease when such auditing processes began, Erdoğan signaled that big holdings would be subjected to financial inspection.

Dismissing arguments that the government was threatening big capital through audits, Erdoğan said:

“We have no any plans to intimidate big capital. What we tell big capital is to be sincere and work properly. Informing against your own country… Forget about it. Do your work properly. We’ll give assessments on you as long as you do your work properly. If not, we have things to do.”

Those who are trying to portray the AKP as corrupt are holding secret talks to replace the government with another one that would not disturb them, Erdoğan said.

“The upcoming elections are local elections. You won’t get the results you are expecting. The AK Parti will win elections to enlighten the country. We will all stand firm. We will have more solidarity. The March 30 elections will mark a turning point for Turkey, for democracy and the national will,” he said.
It’s not important which candidate wins the elections but which party will win, Erdoğan said.

“[This is] because each municipality the AKP wins will have a meaning, because the losers’ lobby will get another blow from the people. Then there will be no obstacle before Turkey and its democracy and the resolution [of the Kurdish question]. We will take more democratization steps and make more reforms,” he said.

‘Islam is no one’s exclusive possession’

Erdoğan also criticized the Gülen movement without directly mentioning it by name, accusing the movement of “being hostile to its own country” and attempting “to steal the national will.”

“Islam is no one’s exclusive possession. Concepts such as serving and raising students are humanitarian concepts,” Erdoğan said. “Despite many of our sincere brothers, who have started with the love of service, the organization has preferred to become a tool for Turkey’s enemies.”

The prime minister said lies targeting him and his party were being distributed around Anatolia. “The biggest theft is the theft of the national will,” he said. “Those who attacked the national will on Dec. 17 [2013] with their fanatics within the judiciary cannot track corruption. They cannot fling the dirt of corruption at us. The losers of the ‘old Turkey’ are singing the tune of corruption as a choir. If you want to see corruption, go look in the mirror.”
