A second audio recording, presented as the voice of Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan asking his son not to accept an amount of money on offer in a business deal but to hold out for more, was published on YouTube by an anonymous poster using a pseudonym on Wednesday.

In the leaked voice recording, uploaded to YouTube and announced on Twitter by Haramzadeler, an unidentified Twitter user who has been leaking voice recordings of high-level state authorities, Erdoğan is allegedly heard talking with his son Bilal Erdoğan and telling him to reject $10 million from Sıtkı Ayan, the owner of Som Petrol, which had been granted tax-free incentives by the government to build new oil pipelines from Iran, saying that the amount was too low.

“Don’t take it. Whatever he has promised us, he should bring this. If he is not going to bring that, there is no need,” the voice on the latest recording, presented by a user under the pseudonym Haramzadeler as that of Erdoğan, says.

“The others are bringing. Why can’t he bring? What do they think this business is? … But don’t worry they will fall into our lap,” the voice says.

“We are going to check whether the tapes are fake or not and no statement is planned at the moment,” a senior government official told Reuters.

The recordings, which appeared within days of the ruling AK Party’s official launch of a campaign for local elections at the end of March, are the latest and potentially most damaging allegations in a graft scandal that Erdoğan has cast as concocted to unseat him.

Late on Monday, his office released a statement describing the first recordings as “completely untrue and the product of an immoral montage.”

Tapes are ‘as real as Ararat’: Main opposition CHP leader

The head of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, has claimed that the leaked voice recording of a conversation between the prime minister and his son is genuine.

“We verified them with three or four different sources. These tapes are as real as Mount Ararat or Mount Erciyes,” Kılıçdaroğlu, told his lawmakers at his parliamentary group meeting Feb. 25.

During the meeting, the CHPleader played the leaked phone conversation, allegedly between Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his son Bilal Erdoğan, into the microphone.

“You transferred dollars, euros, and Turkish Liras using cars and trucks. But new things will be disclosed soon. My advice to you: Take a helicopter and flee abroad and resign. Those who rob the state cannot stay in the Prime Ministry. We can no longer have Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as the prime minister. The government has lost its legitimacy,” he said.

“What saddens me most is to see Erdoğan make his own children a part of his theft,” Kılıçdaroğlu added. “Be sure that I do not feel sorry for Erdoğan, but for his children. Isn’t it a pity for them that you have involved them in your theft?”

The prime minister had complained that even his cryptographic telephones had been eavesdropped on, but Kılıçdaroğlu said this was no defense. “These cryptographic telephones have not been given to you to cover up your corruption. They were given to you to conduct state affairs,” he said.

The main opposition leader recalled that a WikiLeaks document revealed in 2010 claimed that Erdoğan had eight bank accounts in Switzerland. Erdoğan strongly denied the allegations.

“A liar cannot be the prime minister. It’s the first time in our history that we see a prime minister robbing his people,” Kılıçdaroğlu said.

Parliament TV interrupted its broadcast of the CHP group meeting when Kılıçdaroğlu started to play the leaked tape between Erdoğan and his son. The CHP leader later criticized Parliament Speaker Cemil Çiçek for the decision and also slammed the media organizations that followed Parliament TV’s lead.

“The entire family could be in dirt up to their neck and you won’t see it. The entire world will see, but you won’t … You will have the same responsibility the chief thief has,” he said.

Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) spokesman Haluk Koç has said that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has lost his legitimacy over a recently leaked voice recording in which Erdoğan is allegedly heard telling his son to dispose of vast amounts of cash amid an ongoing graft scandal. According to Koç, if Erdoğan does not resign, he will drag the country into social, economic and political chaos.

In the voice recording, which was uploaded to YouTube on Monday evening, Erdoğan allegedly briefs his son on police raids ongoing at the time and asks him to “zero” at least $1 billion in cash stashed at five houses. The conversation allegedly took place on Dec. 17, 2013, as police raided a number of locations in a corruption investigation that has implicated businessmen, high-level bureaucrats, the chief of a state-run bank and the sons of four ministers.

At a press conference at Parliament on Wednesday, Koç said that the official records of the telephone conversations should be released by the Telecommunications Directorate (TİB) as soon as possible. “Lies, conspiracies … Leave all this behind. The date and length of those conversations should be revealed. The TİB should reveal this. It can find the answers to those questions in the official records,” Koç said.

Koç said that this is the first time that a prime minister of the Turkish Republic has faced allegations of robbery and corruption, adding that the allegations are very serious.

Koç said the prime minister’s relatives mentioned in the recording should declare their wealth as soon as possible. Repeating his claim that the prime minister has lost his legitimacy, Koç argued that his failure to resign would lead to political, economical and social stagnation across the country. Koç added that the scandal has, unfortunately, made Turkey look to the world like a banana republic.

Koç said Erdoğan’s denial of the recording’s authenticity was predictable; if he hadn’t denied it, Koç said, he might as well have gotten in a car and driven to prison. “He is currently stuck between these two choices. … If he doesn’t resign, he will stain Turkey’s image before the entire world, as he has done to himself.”

Former Culture and Tourism Minister Fikri Sağlar, also of the CHP, claimed to have a wealth of experience in voice recordings. “In the period when I was a minister, I had access to voice recordings of Korkmaz Yiğit. We did many studies with objective experts to determine whether those recordings were fake or not. I listened the recording of Erdoğan and his son. I also asked some experts. They said that the recording is not a fake and that it has not been dubbed. Yesterday [on Tuesday], the prime minister said, ‘They even wiretapped the cryptophones.’ This telephone conversation is a fact.”

Sağlar said that the recording is authentic. The prime minister should leave politics and never return, he continued, adding that he should also give an account of his deeds before the judiciary.

Former CHP leader Deniz Baykal, who is currently a CHP deputy, said during an event in İstanbul on Tuesday evening that the local elections on March 30 cannot cleanse the government of corruption. The corruption and bribery scandal has been deepening with every passing day, Baykal said, calling on President Abdullah Gül to intervene in the scandal before it is too late.

CHP Deputy Chairman Erdoğan Toprak called the alleged phone conversation between Erdoğan and his son “perilous.” Toprak pointed out that the Telecommunications Directorate (TİB) can prove the recordings’ authenticity or lack thereof. “The prime minister has lost his credibility,” Toprak said.

Meanwhile, Cengiz Hortoğlu, chairman of the Anatolian Alevi-Bektaşi Federation, said that the truth should not be covered up. “The investigation should not be manipulated. Those who are investigating the recording should do their work in an objective manner without any outside pressure.” Difficult days await Turkey if the recording is found to be authentic, Hortoğlu said, adding that Turkey’s international image would be ruined.

Revolutionary Socialist Workers’ Party (DSİP) co-chair Şenol Karakaş said that Erdoğan expects people to believe that a law giving the government control over the judiciary will benefit them. According to Karakaş, if the voice recording is authentic, the only solution to the current crisis is an early general election.
